Finding The Underground
The Underground at The Temple sits in the heart of downtown Flagstaff, steps from Heritage Square, the Weatherford Hotel, and Route 66. The building itself has been standing since 1917, when it was built as a Masonic Temple. The exterior is brick and stone, solid and dignified, the kind of building that looks like it has stories to tell and isn't in a hurry to tell them.
It's one of downtown Flagstaff's most distinctive gift shops, tucked into a building most people walk past without realizing what's downstairs.
You walk in. You go downstairs.
And then things get weird. In the best way.
The Space
The Underground is part retail shop, part creative den, part vibe check. The walls are covered in original artwork. The shelves are stocked with stickers, tees, hoodies, hats, and mugs from every Weird & Wild West collection. The lighting is warm. The music is good. And somewhere nearby, a corgi named Shimmer may or may not be napping.
It doesn't feel like a gift shop. It doesn't feel like a boutique. It feels like walking into someone's creative headquarters and being told to look around and touch everything.
That's intentional. When you're a brand built on the idea that Arizona deserves better than generic merch, your physical space has to prove it.
What You'll Find
Everything available online is available in person, plus the experience of seeing the art up close. Sticker details that don't come through on a screen. Embroidery you can run your fingers across. Colors that hit different when they're not filtered through a phone display.
Some products are only available in person. Limited runs, test prints, things that haven't made it to the website yet. The Underground gets them first.
And if you've been on a Freaky Foot Tours ghost tour through downtown Flagstaff, your guide probably mentioned the shop. Some of them are wearing the merch while they tell you about haunted hotels and frontier-era saloons. That's the ecosystem at work.
The Neighborhood
Downtown Flagstaff is walkable, weird, and full of independent businesses. Within a few blocks of The Underground:
- Route 66 runs right through downtown. The neon signs light up at dusk.
- Heritage Square hosts live music and community events.
- The Weatherford Hotel has been operating since 1900 and has a rooftop bar with San Francisco Peaks views.
- Plantae (112 E Route 66) also carries W&WW stickers if you want to double down on your collection.
Downtown Flagstaff's shopping district is walkable and full of independent stores. From the Flagstaff General Store next door to Black Hound Gallerie and Colors of the West down the street, the neighborhood rewards the kind of shopping where you wander without a plan and leave with something you didn't know you needed.
Flagstaff at 7,000 feet is a different Arizona than what most tourists expect. Cool summers, snowy winters, ponderosa pines instead of saguaros. It's a mountain town with a Route 66 soul and a creative community that punches way above its weight class.
